Population Growth

Oregon

Oregon's population is currently approximately 3.4 million, and growing. Oregon's population grew by more than 20% between 1990 and 2000. At that rate, Oregon's population will double in 36 years.

Oregon's population is expected to increase by one million to 4.3 million by 2025. It's like having:

  • 2 more Portlands
  • 8 more Salems or Eugenes
  • 15 more Beavertons
  • 28 more Bends.

The Portland-Vancouver area is expected to add 809,000 new residents by 2025.

Causes of growth
Natural increase - births minus deaths: 29%
Migration - people moving here from other states: 54%
International Immigration - people moving here from other countries: 14%

Pacific Northwest

Since 1990 the Northwest's growth rate has been twice the North America rate, faster than India's, and almost equal to Egypt's. If this rate continues, population in the Northwest will double from 16 million in 2001 to 32 million in 2040.

United States

The current US Population is approximately 288,000,000. The US is the third most populated nation on Earth, behind China and India.

By 2050 US population is projected to reach 404,000,000. (Low projection is 313 million; high projection is 553 million)

The US has one of the highest growth rates of industrialized nations. Our population increases 3,000,000 annually - it's like adding slightly under the population of Oregon each year!

60-90% of growth will be from immigration.

For more information on US population figures, see the US Census.

World

The world's population is just over 6.2 billion and growing exponentially. Every day the population of two Eugenes are added to the world.
